One of South Africa’s proudest exports and widely celebrated groups, Just Jinjer headline the second Old Mutual Music at the Lake concert of 2014 at the Durban Botanic Gardens on Sunday, 16 March.  Acoustic duo, The Kickstands are the support act.
Just Jinjer’s slick performance has garnered them fans locally and globally. They have shared the stage with big-ticket acts such as Corinne Bailey Rae, Ludacris and Angelique Kidjo, to name a few and Durban fans have a chance to once again experience their charm.

Front-man, Ard Matthews, wowed the crowds when he performed at the scenic location in 2013 and this year, he’s back with the sought after band.

“I’m so excited about performing at the gardens again.  We have some great new material and of course all the favourites,” said Matthews. “I’m from Durban, so I’m very excited to perform at one of my favourite venues.”

The band is currently recording their 9th studio album and are keen to perform live.

A kaleidoscope of colour awaits visitors as the Durban Botanic Gardens puts on a show of another kind – all the plants showing off their summer best.

“We are happy that Just Jinjer could take time off of their hectic schedule to perform at the Old Mutual Music at the Lake,” said Bandile Mngoma, sponsorship manager at Old Mutual.

“It is also a pleasure that while Durban’s sub-tropical climate means we will still enjoy much of the summer fauna in March, it is the last chance to enjoy the season’s highlights so we encourage music lovers not to miss this one,” said Mngoma.

Accompaning Just Jinjer is the Durban-born and acoustic duo, The Kickstands.  The band’s achievements include playing on large stages such as Splashy Fen, Durban Day and the FIFA World Cup.  This dynamic, versatile and zealous duo has managed to merge impressive musicianship with accessible songwriting and melody that’s been met with mammoth popularity.

My fav Just Jinger song is Like You Madly.. it makes me think of when you fall for someone but you are so afraid to say the big L-word coz you aren’t sure if they feel the same and they seem so busy in their own life, so you are very unsure what to do. Also, the beat is hella catchy!!

    Hi Durbanites:)
I used to have a massive poster of Just Jinger on the back of my bedroom door when I was a young teenager and I loved Art Mathews-thought his dreads made him super rebellious which in turn seemed uber cool for a little rebellious 13 yr. old:) I obviously love their music too…plus I want their coffee#I WANT MY COFFEE:) Would love to experience a little deja vu at Bot gardens jamming to Just Jinger:)

My favourite Just Jinger song is Shallow Waters. Besides the fact that it is an amazing song, lyrically and musically, it gives me goosebumps. It always makes me think about my life and where I am going and what I have been through (nevermind it might not be the true meaning of it). It is inspirational. Also, it reminds me of the first time I saw Just Jinger at a concert in Pretoria at my High School in 1998! I loved them since then and still do… Awesome!

For me the song ‘Home’, written by Ard a few years ago is my favourite. The words alone touch your heart and to dedicate a song to Madiba – the man who sacrificed so much for us. The song speaks the truth and gives us another reason to love our country, the man who gave us our freedom and a place to call home. Proudly South African <3

My choice would have to be “What He Means.” It challenged me to re-look at what I believe my God teaches me about treating others. A beautifully crafted challenging song!

Growing up with Just Jinjer as a teenager makes it so difficult to choose a favourite, but their cover of Sugarman was the first time I ever heard the song, and my mind jumps straight to Just Jinjer anytime I hear it, regardless of whose playing it.

OMG! I adore every single song of Just Jinjer! But my absolute favourite is Shallow Waters, it just stirs up some very deep emotion for me. Following Shallow Waters closely behind is Father and Father, simply because I lost my Father 12 years ago and the song just connects with me. We went to see Just Jinjer a few years ago but couldn’t stay long because my little kiddies were not happy with the loud music. This weekend is my 11th wedding anniversary weekend, and I would like it to be just for us 🙂
