This year will mark the 10th anniversary of The Dad’s Charity Cycle Challenge which will see 45 dads taking to the road on their bikes in aid of raising funds for their non-profit organisations.
The cyclists will ride from Johannesburg on Wednesday, October 8th and will arrive in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday, October 12th for the 106km start of the Tsogo Sun Amashova Durban Classic.
The funds raised from the ride will be divided primarily between their chosen charities – the Sunflower Fund, which is their main beneficiary this year, CHOC, The Gauteng Down Syndrome Association (DSA), Employability, and the Fulton School for the Deaf, amongst others.
2005 saw the inception of The Dads’ Charity Cycle Challenge where a number of dads got together and decided to attempt at making a difference to the lives of others less fortunate than themselves, whilst enjoying themselves and keeping healthy at the same time.
They are also involved in a number of other initiatives, such as supporting The Maloney´s Eye Rural Primary School, St. Anne´s Home in KZN, which relies on donations for all its needs, and supports 45 young girls aged between 6 and 14, all who come from impoverished backgrounds.
The organisation also supports a number of school children with the full payment of their school fees in their primary school years who are not even aware where the funds come from.
The group has raised just over R3.5 million since it launched and are looking to top the R4 million mark this year.
The organisation is looking to individuals and corporates to sponsor any of the individual riders. Sponsorship ranges from R1 per km per rider, or all the way up to a lump sum donation.
