Young talented chef, Nasteesh Naipal (22) from the Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharani complex, has won the Baking Masters Competition 2014, in the Up & Coming Category.
The competition called on all bakers with a passion for the art and science baking to enter the Baking Masters Competition 2014 with prizes to the total value of R20 000 up for grabs. The two categories contested were, the Up & Coming category which is aimed at in-store bakers, home industries, artisanal bakers and students, and the Professional Category, aimed at pastry chefs, second-tier bakers and commercial bakeries.
The competition required entrants to use any of the products from the four co-sponsors of the Baking Masters Competition, Sime Darby Hudson & Knight, Anchor Yeast, Euroberry and Macadams.
Naipal’s winning recipes were a Chocolate Citrus Macadamia Biros Bomb and a Mosbolletjies loaf.
Having joined Tsogo Sun in June last year as an intern, Naipal’s hardwork has seen him being recognized as an integral part of the team. “This win means a lot to me as I dedicate it to my late father who passed away in January this year. The cash prize of R10 000 and home equipment will assist me in kick-starting my career and expose me to more future opportunities in the industry.” said Naipal.
“We are extremely proud of our own young developing chef. Nasteesh has displayed a true flair for his art, inspired his peers and restored the confidents and pride in what our complex has to offer” said Shaun Munro, Executive Chef at the Southern Sun Maharani Tower Complex.
Clinton Bonhomme, Executive Sous Chef at Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharani Complex and Naipal’s mentor said, “Nasteesh is a well composed young man that never hesitates to assist his fellow colleagues in the kitchen. When the Baking Masters Competition was released, I immediately felt that this was for him, he put in hours of dedication and the hard work paid off.”
