We were invited to enjoy a night out at Cinema Nouveau, Gateway this past Friday. If you are not aware, Cinema Nouveau holds the prestige of being one of the world’s only dedicated “art cinema” chains, screening independent, ‘art’ and alternative cinema content from cultures all over the world and I can without a doubt say that I will be expanding my horizons and watching more “artsy” movies from here on out!
In life we often have to make choices and this movie going experience was no different. We were given a choice to watch either The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel or Nightcrawler and like any other technologically-savvy young woman would do… I googled. I also took into consideration my +1’s taste and realising he would in all likeliness rather watch paint dry than watch The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel this made my choice easy… Nightcrawler it would be and I wasn’t disappointed.
Star, Jake Gyllenhaal takes us to a world separate from our own, a world which exists while the rest of us are sleeping… the movie synopsis goes like this: “When Lou Bloom, a driven man desperate for work, muscles into the world of L.A. crime journalism, he blurs the line between observer and participant to become the star of his own story. Aiding him in his effort is Nina, a TV-news veteran.”
Stepping into Cinema Nouveau, Gateway one is welcomed by friendly staff (who greet and are happy to have a chat) and what was quite refreshing to me was the gourmet menu with a yummy selection of cheese platters and drinks, including two of my favourites, craft beer and wine! It gave me a feeling of empowerment, not that I ever snuck into a movie with alcohol (I am sure people do it?) but to be able to order and take your selection into the cinema with you was fantastic… no sneaky-sneaky, 100% legit!
If I am honest with you, I have only ever been to one Cinema Nouveau movie before this (in my 30 years of being alive) and all I can say is you should do yourselves a favour and take on the gourmet taste experience; it’s definitely well worth it.

Side note: You will find Cinema Nouveau at Gateway on the Expo/Explore floor (next to the Barnyard). For parking, I would suggest the Wavehouse entrance. I always find it easier to go up (or down a level). You get nice and close to the entrance and do some cardio by walking up or down a flight of stairs, if you lucky there is even a lift!
