Baking is one of the hottest food trends of the decade. Many top selling cookery books at present focus on home baking while television shows such as The Great British Bake Off and its South African spin-off have been hits around the world.

One of the most popular theatres at the Durban Good Food & Wine Show – which takes place from Friday to Sunday – is the Baking Theatre with live demonstrations from some of the country’s top bakers and food personalities.

Learn the techniques of Indian sweetmeat making with Sheila Somers; both Yudhika Sujanani and Asha Maharaj share their secrets for perfect Diwali baking while Sherwyn Weiach bakes with Albany. Others chefs on the show include Cape Town’s Peter Ayub, Expresso chef Zola Nene while there will be classes on how to make the perfect macaron or lemon meringue cupcake. These specialists will also explain why things go wrong and how flops can be rectified.

Admission to the theatre is free with the purchase of an entrance ticket to the show and is on a first come, first served basis.

With the busy programme of events and demos, to plan your day and get the most out of the show, go to the website and review the theatre programmes. There are  childminding services at the Little Einsteins Kids Zone and you can watch the World Cup rugby final at the The George Rugby Zone on Saturday.

The Durban Good Food & Wine Show takes place from October 30 to November 1 at the Durban Exhibition Centre in association with Durban Tourism. Independent Newspapers are a media partner. The visiting chefs will be staying at the Oyster Box Hotel.
