Keep The Promise concert and march is going down THIS WEEKEND at the Sahara Stadium Kingsmead. Its aim? To call for global funding for HIV/AIDS prevention and care.

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) event hopes to build upon the organization’s “Keep The Promise” campaign, an advocacy initiative that calls for:

  • Increased and maintained global funding for HIV/AIDS prevention and care;
  • Pharmaceutical companies to reduce AIDS drug prices;
  • Support for HIV prevention programs;
  • Support for healthcare reform;
  • Decriminalization of HIV/AIDS

Other than the valuable message behind the event, the second best part has to be the epic line up of artists and the fact that it is all FREE. Those attending will be entertained by the likes of the AHF Ambassador B-Flow, as well as Mi Casa and Big Nuz. MC’s Proverb and Ayanda will be keeping you entertained throughout the event, and let’s not forget the international headlining major artists – Queen Latifah and Common!

AHF is the biggest non-profit HIV/AIDS organisation in the world. It provides medicine to over 600 000 patients worldwide. In South Africa, it opened Ithembalabantu Clinic in Umlazi, Durban in 2001 at the time when the government was ambivalent about the rollout of anti-retroviral (ARV) drugs.

The clinic has been a beacon of hope to many people living with HIV in KwaZulu-Natal. It began with 100 patients in an old office building, and now offers care to about 15 000 patients, including children born with HIV.   In saying this we urge all Durbanites, both young and old to continue the fight against HIV/AIDS, educate yourself and those around you about prevention methods.
